Fascinated by the everyday and the exceptional, Merryl Tielman has defined a style all her own. She considers a bag a sculptural object rather than a fashion accessory and pairs enigmatic form with functionality. “People sometimes wonder if I am an educated architect. I am not. Nor am I a fashion designer. I look at shapes. Of a church, a trash can, domestic appliances. I look and study, try and struggle, cut and fold, transforming just a shape into a bag. A bag that holds your personal belongings, whilst looking sharp as hell. Such is a bag by Merryl Tielman.” Merryl Tielman lives and works in Amsterdam where she studied Audiovisual Arts. She fell under the spell of leather when she was educated in shoemaking. It was in creating backs that she could finally express her artistic vision.
